BioScan, an indispensable measuring instrument in the field of Medical Science

BioScan a practical, non-invasive, non-intrusive, highly accurate portable diagnostic monitoring system for assessing Body Composition, Nutritional, Fluid monitoring in both health and clinical patients.

Calibrated for all age groups including different nationality. BioScan is a simple highly accurate system, that uses the entered data and the raw data measured to provide a complete clinical analysis displaying over 35 patients parameters within a few seconds. This information is provided without the need of complex clinical techniques like radioisotope dilution.

Additionally features of the BioScan is its ability to measure and store hundreds of patient data which can be later down loaded into a PC via a high-speed USB interface.

How Does it Work?

BioScan uses scientific patented method of measuring Electrical Impedance. A total of four electrodes are used (tetrapolar). 2 electrodes are applied to the hand and two to the foot. A low-level battery operated electric current is passed through the body and the Impedance (Z) measurement is the frequency dependent opposition of a conductor or flow of an alternating electric current and is a make up of two vectors Resistance (R) and Reactance (Xc) measured at a particular frequency and described mathematically Impedance.

A healthy individual will have a phase angle of between 4 to 15 degrees. Lower phase angle is associated with lower reactance or with cell death or a breakdown in the selective permeability of cell membrane.

High phase angle is associated to be consistent with high reactance and large amounts of waste cell membrane and Body Cell Mass (BCM). Phase Biological tissues act as conductors or insulators and the flow of current through the body will follow the path of least Resistance. Fat Free Mass (FFM) contains large amounts of water and electrolytes and therefore is a better conductor of electrical current than fat and bone, which are poor conductors as they contain low amounts of fluid and conducting electrolytes.Resistance and The cell membrane of a body consists of a layer of non-conductive lipid (fat, oils and other lipid like substance) material sandwiched between two layers of conductive protein molecules. Cell membranes become reactive elements behaving as capacitors when electrical current is applied. Reactance are measured.

Although the principal of electrical Impedance has been well established, it is the Phase sensitive instrumentation like the BioScan that has increased considerable interest in the estimation of Body Composition in the field of Human Nutrition, Human Biology, Physiology and Sports Medicines.

BioScan combines the power of modern electronics and proprietary digital signal processing to compute physical modelling of biological tissues. BioScan allows the estimation of many parameters, including Total Body Water (TBW), Intercellular Water (ICW), Extracellular Water (ECW), Fat Free Mass (FFM), Fat Mass (FM), Body Cell Mass (BCM) and Dry Weight.

How Does It Work?

The advance circuitry and processing power of the BioScan 920-2S allows it to measure Extracellular (ECF) and Intracellular Fluid (ICF) volume without the need of complex clinical techniques like radioisotope dilution. In addition to estimating the standard parameters this advanced system is the worldís first to provide estimation of mineral content.

All data is recorded and displayed immediately for analysis by the system. Results can be viewed on the large graphic LCD display or downloaded via PC to the software for analysis. The graphic Bar Chart displays the % of Extracellular and Intracellular water.

EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT CONFIGURATIONS

Maltron's state of the art circuitry allows you to monitor fluid changes and shift in whole body, thorax, trunk, legs and arms.

At various frequencies biological tissues act as conductors or insulators and current applied will follow a path of least resistance. This is because Fat Free Mass (FFM) which contains large amounts of water (73%) and electrolytes are good conductors of electrical current than Fat Mass (FM). Current passes through Extracellular fluid at low frequencies and at higher it penetrates cell membranes passing through both Intracellular and Extracellular fluid. Fat Mass contains very little water and is a poor conductor of electrical current.

Water, the most abundant element of the body, accounts for almost 50-60% of an adults body weight. The total body water is divided into Intracellular Fluid (ICF) and Extracellular Fluid (ECF). Intracellular fluid is found within the cell mass of the body and Extracellular is outside the cells. The make up of the ECF includes interstitial fluid, blood plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, intraocular fluid and gastrointestinal fluid.

ICF and ECF compartments in a healthy individual are highly regulated. In disease conditions excess fluid accumulation occurs in the Extracellular spaces.

The parameters measured by the BioScan 920-2S provide assessment of clinical and nutritional status helping detect abnormal conditions.
